Everything to know about solar control films in the GTA.
What is solar control window film?
Solar control window film — commonly called window tint or home window tinting — is a thin, optically clear polyester film applied to the inside of your existing glass. It reflects and absorbs part of the sun’s energy before it enters the room, which means less heat, far less glare and up to 99.9% UV rejection, while natural light still comes through.
Unlike replacing windows, residential window tinting is installed in a day with no construction, no mess and a fraction of the cost. It’s one of the most effective comfort upgrades for hot, sunny rooms in Toronto condos and GTA homes.
Types of solar window film
| Film type | Look | Heat control | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light / neutral solar film | Nearly clear to lightly tinted | Moderate | Homes that want the glass to look unchanged |
| Ceramic / spectrally selective | Clear to light tint, low reflection | High for its darkness | Condos and view windows |
| Dual-reflective film | Reflective outside, softer inside | High | Sunny rooms where night views matter |
| Reflective solar film | Mirrored exterior | Very high | Very sunny commercial glass, daytime privacy |
When comparing films, look at VLT (visible light transmitted — how bright the room stays), TSER (total solar energy rejected — the best single measure of heat control) and UV rejection. We’ll recommend a film that balances all three for each window.
Heat blocking window film for hot, sunny rooms
Large south- and west-facing windows, top-floor condos, sunrooms and rooms with skylights take the brunt of the summer sun. Heat reduction window film evens out hot spots near the glass, lowers peak cooling load on the hottest afternoons and helps your air conditioning keep up. It won’t rebuild your home’s energy profile on its own, but in glass-heavy GTA homes it’s one of the most cost-effective fixes available — see does solar film really cut AC bills?
UV window film to stop fading
UV is the single biggest contributor to fading of hardwood floors, furniture, artwork and cabinetry. UV window film blocks up to 99.9% of it while leaving the glass clear. Visible light and heat also play a part in fading, so film slows fading dramatically rather than stopping it completely — but for south-facing rooms full of hardwood and fabric, the difference is very noticeable.
Anti-glare film for screens and home offices
Glare is often the first thing people notice after installation. Anti-glare window film takes the harshness out of low afternoon sun, so TVs and monitors stay readable and rooms are comfortable to sit in — without the darkness of closed blinds.
Commercial window tinting for offices and storefronts
For offices, retail and institutions, solar film improves occupant comfort, cuts glare on workstations, reduces fading of merchandise and gives large glass façades a uniform appearance. Installs can be scheduled around business hours to keep disruption low. See commercial window film in Toronto.
Is solar film safe for double-pane and low-E windows?
Yes, when the film is matched to the glass. We check glass type, pane size, coatings and orientation before recommending a film, so it delivers the benefit without putting excess heat stress on the glass. Our guide to window film on double-pane and low-E windows explains the details.
Cost, installation and warranty
Solar window film is priced by the square foot of glass, and the film type is the biggest factor — our window tinting cost guide shows typical GTA ranges. Most homes are completed in a single visit: we clean the glass, cut and apply the film, and squeegee it smooth. The film then cures over a few weeks. Our window films carry a lifetime warranty for residential and a 10-year warranty for commercial applications.

How much does window tinting cost?
Window film is priced by the square foot of glass, and the film type is the biggest factor. Our window tinting cost guide shows typical GTA ranges, and we provide free, itemised quotes within 24 hours.
Does solar window film work in winter?
Solar film mainly targets summer heat, glare and UV, and it keeps blocking UV all year. It slightly reduces the sun’s warmth in winter too; specialised low-E films can help hold heat in, so tell us if winter comfort matters most.
Will window tint make my home dark?
Not unless you want it to. Many solar films are nearly clear, and ceramic films reject a lot of heat without heavy tinting.
Can I see out at night with tinted windows?
With neutral and ceramic films, yes. Highly reflective films can mirror the inside at night when your lights are on, so we recommend them selectively.
Does window film stop furniture fading completely?
It blocks up to 99.9% of UV, the biggest cause of fading, which slows fading dramatically. Visible light and heat also contribute, so no film can stop it entirely.
How long does solar window film last?
Professionally installed interior film lasts for many years. Our residential window films carry a lifetime warranty.
