Roller Shades guide

Everything to know about roller shades in the GTA.

What are roller shades (and roller blinds)?

Roller shades — often called roller blinds in Canada — are a single panel of fabric that winds up neatly onto a tube at the top of the window. Pull them down for shade, privacy or darkness; raise them and they almost disappear. That simplicity is exactly why they’re the most popular custom window covering in Toronto condos, GTA family homes and offices: clean lines, no slats to dust, and a huge choice of fabrics.

Every Prime roller shade is custom made to measure for your window and can be operated with a cordless lift or a quiet motor — no dangling cords. You choose the fabric, the colour, the mount and the hardware; we take care of the final measurement and professional installation.

Roller shade fabrics: sheer, light-filtering, room-darkening and blackout

The fabric does most of the work. Picking the right openness for each room is the single most important decision:

Roller shade fabric types
FabricLight & viewPrivacyBest for
Sheer / solar screenCuts glare and UV while keeping the viewDaytimeCondos with a view, living rooms, offices
Light-filteringSoft, diffused daylightDay and nightKitchens, living and dining rooms
Room-darkeningVery little light through the fabricFullBedrooms, home offices
BlackoutVirtually no light through the fabricFullBedrooms, nurseries, media rooms

Solar screen roller shades are rated by openness factor — the percentage of open weave. Lower openness (around 1–3%) controls more glare, heat and UV; higher openness (around 5–10%) keeps more of the view. For a south-facing condo living room, a low-openness screen is usually the sweet spot.

Blackout roller blinds for bedrooms and nurseries

Blackout roller blinds block virtually all light passing through the fabric — but a truly dark bedroom also depends on light coming around the edges. Outside mounting that overlaps the frame, side channels and a cassette at the top close those gaps. We plan this at the measure so your blackout roller shades deliver the darkness you expect. Read our guide to getting a truly dark bedroom.

Motorized and cordless roller shades

Motorized roller shades run on a quiet motor hidden in the tube, controlled by remote, wall switch, app, voice assistant or schedule. Rechargeable battery motors need no wiring — ideal for condos and existing homes — while hardwired motors suit renovations and new builds. They’re perfect for tall, wide or hard-to-reach windows, and they’re cordless, which makes them the safest choice for homes with young children. See are motorized blinds worth it?

Roller shades for every room

  • Living rooms and condos — sheer or solar screen roller shades tame glare and protect floors from fading while keeping the city or lake view.
  • Bedrooms — blackout or room-darkening roller blinds for better sleep, often outside-mounted for fewer light gaps.
  • Kitchens and bathrooms — easy-to-wipe fabrics and a simple, clean profile that stays out of the way.
  • Home offices — light-filtering or screen fabrics cut glare on monitors without making the room dark.
  • Offices and commercial fit-outs — a uniform look across dozens of windows, with motorized groups for boardrooms.

Colours, mounts and finishing options

Choose from whites, neutrals, greys and deeper tones in plain, textured and woven fabrics. Inside mounts sit neatly within the window recess; outside mounts cover the frame for maximum light control. Add a cassette or valance to hide the roller, pick a bottom-bar finish to suit your décor, and — in condos with exterior-appearance rules — select a fabric with a neutral backing so the building looks uniform from the street.

Roller shades vs. zebra blinds

Roller shades give one clean fabric with a specific job — blackout for sleep, screen for glare. Zebra blinds combine sheer and solid bands so you can switch between view and privacy in one shade. Many GTA homes use both: zebra blinds in living areas and blackout roller shades in bedrooms. Compare them in our zebra blinds vs. roller shades guide.

How much do custom roller shades cost?

Price depends on window size, fabric, mount and whether you add motorization. Send approximate measurements for a free, itemised quote within 24 hours.

What’s the difference between roller shades and roller blinds?

Nothing, really — they’re the same product. “Roller blinds” is the more common term in Canada and the UK, while “roller shades” is common in North American design. Both describe a single fabric panel that rolls onto a tube.

Are blackout roller shades completely dark?

The blackout fabric itself blocks virtually all light. How dark the room gets depends on light around the edges, which outside mounting, side channels and a top cassette largely eliminate.

Which roller shade fabric is best for a living room with a view?

A sheer or solar screen fabric. It cuts glare and UV while keeping your view, and a lower openness factor gives more glare control.

Can roller shades be motorized?

Yes. Motorized roller shades can be battery-powered or hardwired and controlled by remote, wall switch, app, voice or schedule.

Are your roller blinds child-safe?

Yes. We offer cordless and motorized roller shades, which have no accessible cords — the safest option for homes with young children.
