Zebra Blinds guide

Everything to know about zebra blinds in the GTA.

What are zebra blinds?

Zebra blinds — also called zebra shades, dual shades, day-night blinds or banded shades — use a continuous loop of fabric with alternating horizontal bands of sheer and solid material. The loop passes in front of itself on a single roller, so as you raise or lower the blind the two layers slide past each other.

Line the sheer bands up and you get a soft, filtered view with plenty of daylight. Shift the solid bands over the sheers and you get privacy and a dimmer room. Raise the blind fully and the window is completely clear. One custom covering, three looks — which is why zebra blinds have become one of the most requested window coverings in Toronto and across the GTA.

How zebra shades control light and privacy

Zebra blind positions
PositionWhat you seeBest for
Sheers aligned (open)Soft, filtered daylight and an outside viewDaytime living, glare control
Solids aligned (closed)Privacy and a dimmer roomEvenings, street-facing rooms
Fully raisedA clear, unobstructed windowMaximum daylight

Because you can fine-tune the position, zebra shades give much more nuanced light control than a single-fabric shade — handy in rooms that need different light at different times of day.

Zebra blind fabrics, textures and colours

Zebra blind collections vary in band width, texture and colour — from crisp whites and soft greys to warm linens and deeper tones. Narrow bands give a finer, more contemporary look; wider bands feel bolder. Room-darkening zebra fabrics use denser solid bands for bedrooms, but if you need a genuinely dark room, blackout roller shades remain the better choice.

Motorized and cordless zebra blinds

Motorized zebra blinds make it effortless to move the bands into exactly the right position, and they can run on schedules — opening to filtered light in the morning and closing to privacy at dusk. Battery motors suit existing homes and condos; hardwired options suit renovations. Cordless operation keeps children and pets safe. Learn more in our motorized blinds guide.

Where zebra blinds work best

  • Living and family rooms — filtered daylight for the day, privacy for movie night.
  • Kitchens and dining areas — glare control over counters and tables without losing light.
  • Street-facing rooms — see out while neighbours and passers-by can’t easily see in during the day.
  • Condos with a view — keep the skyline visible while softening harsh afternoon sun.
  • Home offices — adjust the bands to keep glare off your screen as the sun moves.

Zebra blinds are a strong fit almost anywhere you want flexibility. For total darkness, pair them with blackout roller shades in bedrooms — see our zebra blinds vs. roller shades comparison.

Caring for your zebra blinds

Zebra blinds are low-maintenance. Dust them regularly with a soft cloth or the soft-brush attachment of your vacuum, and spot-clean marks gently with mild soap and water where the fabric allows. With a quality fabric and proper installation, they keep their shape and smooth operation for years.

Common questions

Zebra Blinds — your questions answered.

Prefer to talk it through? Call (647) 921-4383 — we’re happy to help.

How much do zebra blinds cost?

Price depends on window size, the fabric collection, the mount and whether you add motorization. Send approximate measurements for a free, itemised quote within 24 hours.

What’s the difference between zebra blinds and roller blinds?

A roller blind is a single fabric panel. A zebra blind uses two layers with alternating sheer and solid bands, so you can switch between a filtered view and privacy without raising the blind.

Are zebra blinds the same as zebra shades or dual shades?

Yes. Zebra blinds, zebra shades, dual shades, day-night blinds and banded shades all describe the same style of covering.

Do zebra blinds give privacy at night?

Yes — with the solid bands aligned, they provide good privacy. For a completely dark room, blackout roller shades are the better choice.

Can zebra blinds be motorized?

Yes. Motorized zebra blinds can be controlled by remote, wall switch, app, voice or schedule, and they’re cordless for safety.

Are zebra blinds good for a living room?

They’re one of the best options for living rooms — filtered daylight and a view during the day, privacy in the evening, all in one blind.
